It’s a given you turn the tap and see water, but someone needs to ensure critical water infrastructure is installed, replaced or repaired to ensure GAWB can continue to deliver safe and reliable water services.
Enter Zac Smith, GAWB’s Program Delivery Manager in our Capital team.
We asked Zac a few questions about his role and his career in the water industry.
When you were little, what did you want to be?
Honestly, I have no idea. Probably some type of sports person.
Tell us about your professional development journey.
I started out as an electrician before moving into project management. I joined GAWB as a project manager and am now the Program Delivery Manager, thanks to a development opportunity and the support GAWB has provided to help me succeed.
Why did you choose a career in water?
Coming from the mining industry, I was drawn to the water sector because it offers the chance to apply my experience in resource management to a more sustainable and community-focused field. Water is essential for both industry and life, and I wanted to contribute to its responsible use and long-term availability.
How would you describe your job to an acquaintance at a barbecue?
I like to keep this pretty simple. I manage a team of project managers and construction supervisors that deliver sustaining capital projects.
Why do you choose to work in Gladstone?
I was born in Gladstone, and it will always be home. It also has a wide range of different industries and offers a great variety of work.
What’s the most interesting thing about your job?
The management of the capital program, working with my team of project managers and construction supervisors, and working with both internal and external stakeholders to successfully deliver critical capital projects. It’s rewarding to see how our collaboration and problem-solving directly contribute to improving infrastructure and benefiting the community.
Who or what inspires you professionally?
Professionally, I’m inspired by leaders who prioritise innovation, sustainability, and teamwork, driving positive change in their industries. Seeing how effective leadership and collaboration can transform challenges into opportunities motivates me to grow and make an impact.
How do you maintain work/life balance?
GAWB offers great work-life balance, allowing me to spend quality time with my family by making it to the gym after work with my wife and attending my son’s school and sporting events. It’s important to have a career that supports both professional and personal life.
