Local runners lacing up for the Boyne Valley 50 Trail Run

It’s been one year since Gladstone Area Water Board (GAWB) opened the Four Mile Scrub to Boynedale Bush Camp Rail Trail and it’s been a smashing success.

GAWB Chief Executive Officer Darren Barlow said the rail trail has been incredibly popular with walkers and runners and it will be showcased again on Saturday 20 July with the Boyne Valley 50 trail run.

“When we opened the Four Mile Scrub to Boynedale Bush Camp Rail Trail in 2023 we anticipated the trail would be popular, and events such as the Boyne Valley 50 provide even more opportunity to use the trail and live a healthy, active lifestyle,” Mr Barlow said.

“The Boyne Valley 50 is the perfect way to celebrate one year since the Four Mile Scrub to Boynedale Bush Camp rail trail opened.

“We’re proud to support grass roots community events which encourage people to live healthy, active lifestyles, make use of our recreational facilities and explore the region.

“Our aim for the Four Mile Scrub to Boynedale Bush Camp rail trail was to increase liveability and boost economic benefit for the entire region. The Boyne Valley 50 Trail Run is a wonderful example of that vision coming to life.

“Rail trails support healthy active lifestyles, and we hope the Boyne Valley 50 will become a legacy that celebrates community connection and the natural beauty of the area.

“The Boyne Valley 50 has options for beginner trail runners right through to the seasoned novice. Once you’ve finished the run, you can soak in the natural beauty of Boynedale Bush Camp and even camp under the stars.”

Event coordinator Kyle Adams was thrilled to have GAWB’s support.

“The Boyne Valley 50 trail run was created by a group of local runners passionate about bringing more trail running events to the region,” Mr Adams said.

“The trail run is a showcase for the Boyne Burnett Inland Rail Trail network and everything that’s great about the Boyne Valley, including Lake Awoonga and Boynedale Bush Camp.

“We’re grateful for GAWB’s support and excited to create something new for the community. The Boyne Valley is a stunning backdrop with a supportive community, so we hope everyone gives it a go, whether experienced or new to trail running.

“Importantly, 10% of all event registration fees will be donated to the Builyan Many Peaks Community Development Association and Boyne Burnett Inland Rail Trail Inc.”

The Boyne Valley 50 is a multi-distance trail running event along the Dawes Range section of the Boyne Burnett Inland Rail Trail from Builyan to Barrimoon. Race options include the Full 50k, the 25k Downhill, the 12k Taster or the 6k Teaser.

The Four Mile Scrub to Boynedale Bush Camp rail trail is an initiative of the 2020-2025 Lake Awoonga Recreational Strategy, a $7 million investment into outdoor recreation and liveability initiatives, developed in partnership with GAWB’s Community Consultation Forum.

The six kilometre walking trail forms part of the Boyne Burnett Inland Rail Trail network and feature sections for non-motorised travel such as walking and cycling, while the Four Mile Scrub section is open to foot traffic only.

Boynedale Bush Camp is provided free to the public, offering a composting toilet, fire pits, picnic tables and shelters, and is located approximately a 45 minute drive from Gladstone Central.
